On Fascism, Etc.

On Accusations that I am racist, facist, or any such thing...

As absurd as it feels to have to write this after 12 years of active service to the occult community at large, five dedicated full time to the activist youth community, it is my unfortunate position to represent the needs of people who fall in the lowest socio-economic positions within said community. Of late it has become the fashion to accuse those whose politics are generally Libertarian and anti-Authoritarian of collusion with fascistic and racist ideology. These accusations come from a radical Marxist base which, while I am well familiar with and agree with some positions of, I do not hold. Nor, if I did hold them, would it be appropriate for me to enforce them in my position as clergy.

Given my own activism and position in various small ponds, it is not surprising that I have now come under such accusation. Let me put to rest, then, any such concerns that anyone may have in this matter.

This button was found on Trimet on March 22nd, 2017 by a member of Spiral Cult Circus. It is troubling because while the equal-armed cross in a circle is used by some white supremacists, it is also used by pagans, Celtic Christians, some Native Americans, and many others to represent their faiths. This artifact represents a deliberate campaign to encourage radical, racialized street violence in our area. Innocent members of the magical community may thereby come to harm due to their jewelry, tattoos, or clothing leading to misidentification.

The organization I serve as Storyteller is a Hermetic Fraternal Order. As is customary to such, the politics of individual members is their own business, though lively and polite or even heated debate is encouraged so long as the bounds of decency be not crossed. This is how one conducts civil discourse. The same is applied to religious beliefs. This is to avoid dogmatism and the use of religious organizations to spread particular political ideologies, conspiracy theories, and the like. In that sense, we conduct ourselves as we believe a church ought.

We are staunchly anti-authoritarian. My primary job, when people come to me with complaints, is to help them figure out how they are going to solve the situation and address the behavior themselves. If they need an advocate with them, that is fine; but the other person gets one, too. If the situation is serious enough to warrant it, we take down both people's side of the story and keep an internal record. That is all we do.

We do not run around the community destroying the reputations of people we have decided we do not like. We do not involve external authorities unless a situation is actually life-threatening. We don't try to interfere with people's personal lives at all. We have no authority whatever to carry out any kind of pogrom. That is exactly what Spiral Cult Circus space was made to be safe from.

As a vibrant and ideologically diverse space, we detest any notion that any kind of speech should be met with violence. This is a disgrace on the lips of anyone who has ever spoken in the cause of peace, and any such should be ashamed of themselves. Right now we stand on the brink of both a Civil War, and a massive war between the Great Powers. We are fools who throw flame on the fire, and claim to be for the cause of Love and Peace.

This is not the way my Mother raised me. When I attend the space of another, I Honor the Peace of the Hall. I respect all the people in it. I hear their voices, and see their faces, and know that they are fellow human beings. Wherever they have come from, and wherever they are going, they are here now. And they are a guest of the Hall - just like me. If we cannot do this, then we will lose. We can't reach people if we can't even hear them. It's just not possible.

We honor the Law of Thelema as the most succinct expression of appropriate ethics for the magical community to date. That dictum is, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law,” and “Love is the Law, Love under Will.” Today is the third day of the Writing of the Book of the Law, and I have come under attack for defending this our central tenet; the only one we really have.

This is my word on the matter of violence against the Bretheren, whatever their beliefs: I am against it; both personally and in my official capacity. If anyone throws a punch at one of my events, whatever the provocation, I will throw that person out. We do not welcome violence in our space. Because our spaces are politically diverse, this has become a legitimate concern; as our community has many people trained with martial capacities.

Please, friends, don't lets hurt each other.

Because if somebody has breeched the peace so far that it is not possible to give that person the benefit of the doubt, it falls to me to deal with the expulsion. Personally. If someone is claiming that that has happened, I have to decide. And I get to take the blame. If I ever step out of line, even once, my Board of Directors will remove me from my position. At this point, after five long years, I would gladly lay down the Hat if anyone else would do the job.

Yours always,
